Swords, brought to the surface
Too much of Swords is hidden in plain sight.
Useful information about the town exists everywhere — across councils, transport operators, datasets, documents, community groups and people’s own knowledge.
But it is fragmented.
Swords Live brings that information together around the real places and things it belongs to.
A bus stop.
A tree.
A road.
A development.
A public asset.
A historic place.
Each can become more than a point on a map. It can have a current state, a history, evidence, photographs, contributions and knowledge that build over time.
The aim is simple: make Swords easier to see.
Swords Live is designed around the most current state of the town.
Where is the bus now?
What is planned here?
Has that problem been resolved?
What is the weather doing?
What is known about this tree today?
What has changed at this place?
As those current states are retained, something else happens:
Swords develops a memory.
Instead of repeatedly replacing yesterday with today, the story of how the town changes can accumulate.
Different parts of Swords Live reveal different dimensions of the same place.
Transport reveals movement.
Trees and biodiversity reveal nature.
Swoop reveals problems.
Planning reveals change.
Weather and climate reveal environment.
Local history reveals identity.
Places reveal what is around you.
These are not separate ideas.
They are different ways of seeing Swords.
Not everything worth knowing about Swords exists in an official database.
People know things.
Community groups know things.
Councils, businesses, operators and organisations know things.
Swords Live creates a place where those different contributions can become attached to the real thing or location they concern, while retaining where the information came from.
That means the picture of Swords can become richer over time.
The place itself can begin to accumulate knowledge.
Greater visibility brings responsibility.
A live view of a place can reveal a late bus, a broken asset, an unresolved problem or information that is out of date.
It can also reveal good performance, repair, response and improvement.
The principle is important:
The place is what is being observed — not the person.
Swords Live is about making the state of the town more visible, while preserving evidence and provenance and allowing people to form their own view.
Awareness of a place cannot simply be handed from one person to another.
But the conditions for it can be improved.
A map can reveal the tree you have walked past for years.
Live transport can reveal how the town moves.
Planning information can reveal how a familiar place is about to change.
History can reveal what happened where you are standing.
Swords Live creates more opportunities to notice.
And over time, to know the place better.
Swords gets it first.
Swords Live is not a disposable pilot or a temporary testbed.
Swords is the first place receiving this depth of attention — and the information, history and knowledge accumulated here stay valuable to Swords as the system grows.
If the underlying idea later works in other places, that does not make Swords less important.
It makes Swords the origin.
It started here.
Swords Live is the experience being built for Swords.
MapClick is the technology underneath it.
Its premise is simple: information belongs to real things in real places.
Those things can have a current state, contributions from different sources, provenance and a history.
Swords Live is the first implementation of that model.
As MapClick develops, the underlying capability can become transferable to other places while Swords Live continues to deepen here.
Swords Live develops it in Swords.
MapClick makes it transferable.
